RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Hello Richard, I found this thread about a month ago and started reading. I read about 50 pages or so at a time but after 150 pages (and 500 to go) I had to jump to the end. I jumped to page 550 which on my computer is where Old Fella died. I have just finished reading the last 24 pages. I am so sorry for your loss, it is amazing how quickly "just a dog" can become "my baby". Four years ago Coco (my poodle) was killed by a black lab. I swore I would never have another dog. Then a friend asked if I could take Rosco (her schnauzer, age 2) and Bradford (her silky terrier, age 8) because they were going on the road and would be unable to care for them properly. I finally consented and quickly fell in love. About six months later Bradford became very sick, the vet found a tumor about the size of a cantaloupe in his abdomen. I was devastated, I wasn't ready to lose another dog. Our choice was $800 surgery which he might survive (but probably wouldn't) and a probable re-occurrence in a few months, or $95 euthanasia. I figured if the vet was recommending the much cheaper option, it was really the best. (He had known Bradford much longer than I had) Bradford went to sleep without pain for the first time in months. The worst part for me was discovering he was in so much pain all that time and I had no idea. He was very quiet and hardly moved, but I didn't know that was because he was sick. I just thought it was because he was so old. I know 8 is not really old, but Coco was only 18 months when I lost her. Rosco is still here and has been a blessing. He has helped me get over both Coco and Bradford. He is looking at me now as if to say "what are you up too now, it's bedtime." Thank you for what you did for Old Fella and for many others through this on-line community. You have touched so many lives. I grew up in the country and we often found the results of pets who were put out on their own. You may have gators in southern GA, northern SC now has coyotes. Pets left on their own in the country don't stand a chance. Thank you for starting a shelter in your area and for letting people see what can happen when they give a little love. Did they ever get the book out? I would love to see this thread in book form so it would be easier to read. If anyone knows an easy way to print the entire thread, let me know. I don't always have my computer with me when I have free time. I love the saying someone sent you "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened". That is life. As Rosco would say if he could talk, "it's a new day, let's go play".

RE: So frustrating!

This really surprises me, I have had no problems with Forest River. Of course I wasn't buying a new camper, my issues have all had to do with replacement parts. But they have always been great. By the way, when I was at the factory last summer there were several hundred campers to the side of the factory waiting to be shipped out. There were another 15 or so out front waiting for pickup that day. I can see how one could be missed. That is no excuse, just an observation. One question, why aren't you calling Forest River yourself? The dealer is not as concerned about this as you are. I have never worked through a local "rep", I always call Forest River directly. Especially in this case, I would have started calling the first week it was forgotten.

RE: pop up depreciation

Thanks for all of the replys. I did not pay much for my pop up and will not be trading it in. The roof leaked last winter and the canvas is stained. It's not worth putting any money in to it. The wife and I are going to check out a 3612 Centennial. We paid $2000 for our PU several years ago. In the past year we have paid $1600 to replace the roof and canvas. Now we have a PU that we have paid $3600 for that will last us for years. We had several "repairmen/salesmen" tell us that it was not worth repairing. Well, we probably won't be able to sell it for $4000, but then if gas keeps going up and people keep looking for smaller campers then we may. What we are looking at is a PU that is repaired as opposed to payments for the next five years. I would definitely repair it again before putting $10,000 into a new one.

RE: Roof Repair

We just replaced both our roof and canvas in the past year. We bought the roof from the factory and picked it up ourselves ($800). We saved close to $600 shipping by picking it up ourselves, the factory is close to my sisters home. We just combined it with a visit. Borrowed a few friends and replaced it within an hour. Last January we sent our canvas to Bear Creek Canvas and they sewed us a new one for $800. We got it put on a few weeks ago. If you are the least bit handy I would recommend replacing it yourself. On a side note, if all of your side walls are rotting, there is a good change the whole top is rotting. But check it before you do anything. The side pieces would be a fairly easy replacement. We found out how bad ours was when I put a screwdriver all the way through the roof...easily. Check around the seams, that is where I found the moisture. It was extensive enough we decided to just replace the whole thing. It was expensive, but we now have $3600 into a trailer we will be able to use for years...and no payments! :) By the way, if you do buy a new roof, buy your latches at the same time. We ended up replacing our latches due to rust. We had to buy them from the factory. If we had known this when we got the roof we could have gotten them at the same time as the roof.

RE: Top ten reasons you still go RVing despite the price of fuel

Asian Family's travel as a unit. The hole family goes Grandfather, Grandmother, wife, and Kids, Its the cheapest way to take a trip. Spend gas on one MH or gas for two cars and hotel? There also alot of other advantages too. I got ya beat...add a sister, niece, and nephew and two dogs to the mix. Much cheaper (and more fun) than two cars and a hotel. It is also easier to take those last minutes turns to "see what's down that road" when RVing. And I have to add...because we can. It is so worth the money, and even with the extra on gas we still come out cheaper than a hotel/plane tickets/rental car/restaurants.

RE: Witnessed Substantial decrease in travel?

I don't think the gas price is affecting people in Chatt. We went to Chesterfrost Park last weekend and upon arrival Fri am there were 5 spaces available.

RE: Buying new RV and neighbors losing it all in floods.

Buy the RV and then use it to help. After hurricane Andrew hit FL several years ago, my dad had a job taking donated RV's down to victims who had nowhere to live. He loved the job because he enjoys helping people out. Unless you intend to take the money you would spend on the RV to Iowa, there is no reason not to use your hard-earned money to improve your lifestyle. Don't feel guilty because someone else doesn't have what you have. There will always be someone somewhere who needs help.

RE: Why won't my Jayco PUP crank down?

We have had the problem with our back corner not going all the way down on occasion, we have always been able to push it down. When we replaced the top, we had to lift it several times before we got it squared away and coming down together. Now it is coming down even. But ours is a Flagstaff, so we may have a different lift system.

RE: Knoxville to Asheville

Knox to Ash is a piece of cake comapred to Monteagle. You'll probably ask... what mtns?" So True. If you can do Monteagle, you can do I-40 with no problem. :B

RE: Big Hole In The Roof...

We have a vent and are replacing it with an a/c. My DH is so afraid of messing up the roof that he is planning to pay the service center $100 to install it. I hate to pay them to do it, but I also would hate to have to replace that $800 roof again.

RE: How do you keep pests from entering your trailer?

The only problem I have had is ants last summer, they had some South American ants infesting the forest areas in SC. They came out and sprayed the campsites daily. The ranger was very good about making sure he got all areas of contact with the ground. We found ants inside one morning. Finally traced them to a branch that was hitting the top of our awning when the wind would blow. Now how did those ants figure out the occasional touch of a tree branch to a piece of awning would eventually lead them to food? Lost half a chocolate cake to those buggers! :(

RE: Couple mods with pics - Bunk and shelving mod

Did this this weekend after reading about it here on the board. My shelving unit is smaller and I have the short shelf sitting on the counter (I hate the counter being so low) for my coffee maker. I have always used the bunk for storage while popped up, but I love the stability I have by removing the mattress. Can't believe I never thought of it before.

RE: I can't find what I need

We have the same issue. I've not done anything yet, but have toyed with the idea of just taking out the holder and making my own out of plywood. I would keep it in the same place, just recessed into the cabinet.

RE: Expensive, but Interesting (C.A.M.P. Technologies)

I got a PU to get off the ground, why would I pay that much to get back on the wet dirt? For that price, I'm getting a trailer.

RE: No bubble levels on PUP

He Ruide is right. Screw in the levels. On our first trip out we tried our best to level that thing. The levels said we were level but it just didn't look right and a ball did roll across the floor. Next trip we used our carpenters level and found out the stick on levels were way off. Haven't used them since.

RE: Canvas Replacement Question

Ok, guys. When we were debating on replacing the canvas, there were plenty of people out there telling us to replace it ourselves. Where are you now?

RE: How to set-up in wind or should I?

If you can popup, do it. We spent the weekend in 40+ mph gusts several years ago with sustained winds over 30 for the entire weekend. The only problem we had was the awning flapped the whole time (it was rolled up) and tore half the bag off the top. So bungie your awning to the top. I have read on here (and I tend to agree) that the PU can take more wind than you can. We enjoyed that weekend, but probably would not have stayed more than a weekend. My biggest annoyance was having to do everything inside. Normally we only sleep inside.

RE: Repairing a 1989 Coleman canvas.

I just bought a replacement canvas for my PU from Bear Creek. Will put it on next week (glad to hear it should only take two hours). In the long run, if you have a good box and roof, replace the canvas. I paid $2000 for a '96 Flagstaff about 5 years ago. Since then we have replaced the lift system, roof, and now the canvas (did all the work ourselves). With the little extras we added we have spent about another $2000. We now have a good camper that we plan to use for about ten years and then sell for a couple of thousand. At the prices for newer campers today, you rarely get to the point where you save money by buying newer. Ours has cost us $4000, but it is paid for and ready to roll until we get tired of it...yea right, hasn't happened yet! :)

Canvas Replacement Question

We took our canvas off last winter, sent if off to Bear Creek and now have the new canvas sitting in our living room. Guess what we are doing next weekend? :B I do have a question for our experts who have done this before. We have a '96 Flagstaff. When we took the canvas off, we must have taken out 75 to 100 screws. From the placement I think some of them may have been added by previous owners. When you replaced your canvas, did you have so many screws? Most were in the top, about 20 were around the bottom of the main box. There were three in the slides on each bunkend. I'm just wondering if this is normal? Thanks

RE: Bag Awning Question

I have not had a problem with my bag awning flapping around while driving. The one time I did have a problem was during a strong wind storm in GA. It actually tore the front half of the bag off of the trailer. We bungied it to get it home, then took it off and resewed it ourselves (not a hard job, use upholstery needles). We planned to attach velcro to prevent that ever happening again, but just never have gotten around to it.
